African Americans have American surnames instead of African surnames due to the history of slavery in the United States. This practice continued after the abolition of slavery, as African Americans were often not given the opportunity to reclaim their African heritage and surnames. As a result, many African Americans today carry surnames that reflect the legacy of slavery and the forced assimilation into American culture. **
